Our Garden Almanac -- August 20, 2016

2016 was a very good year for our Sunflowers, which we like to grow along the side of our picket fence that borders on the drive way.  The flowers add the dimension of height to our yard, and on the north side, they don't cast a shadow over our crops.  This year we had at least 8 stand well over six feet tall, three with nice large faces more than a foot wide across.  We started all of these from seed.  Some were from seeds of flowers grown in previous years, some from packets.  Saturday was harvest day and we sure had fun.  We all looked back in our memories to the day in April when Wyatt and Ingrid planted the little starter pots and thought about how we watched them sprout and grow large enough to fend off the pill bugs before putting them in the ground.  One of the large flowers this year seemed to be a breed apart from the rest.  Its seeds were an inch long!
