Our Garden Almanac -- March 2, 2017

Not long after moving into our home about five years ago, we got a wysteria and put it in a pot by our front door, with visions of purple blossoms overhanging our front stoop.  At first the plant grew well, but last year it seemed to be unable to extend itself further.  The ends of the vines lacked vitality and the plant looked unhappy.  I'd been wanting to create a bigger planter box by the side of the stoop since we moved in, and regretted that there was no soil space to plant anything in on that side of our stoop, owing to the driveway.  However, my neighbor and good buddy, Joel, a couple of years ago showed me not to be intimidated by a little concrete when he rented a jack hammer to remove his stoop and replace it with a brick step.  So this year, tackling this project finally rose to the top of my to-do list.
